Water Management & Irrigation Development – Republic of Cabo Verde

Start Date:
2021

Status: In Progress

Cabo Verde, an archipelago off the West African coast, faces severe water scarcity due to its arid climate. Population growth, tourism, and industry demand increasing amounts of water, while droughts intensify due to climate change. VTK Innoystem Ltd., under an intergovernmental agreement between Hungary and Cabo Verde (2019, 2024), is leading an innovative water management project to improve water access for agriculture.

Key Developments:

Seawater Desalination for Agriculture

Establishing six SWRO (Seawater Reverse Osmosis) plants across five islands, producing irrigation water to support agriculture & local farming.

Renewable Energy Integration

Constructing solar power farms at each site to sustainably power the desalination process, creating one of the largest solar power plants in Cabo Verde.

Training & Capacity Building

Educating local personnel on SWRO plant operation and maintenance to ensure long-term sustainability.

This project will reduce dependence on food imports, enhance agricultural productivity, and provide a sustainable solution to Cabo Verde’s growing water challenges.
