Design and Upgrading of Karenge Water Treatment Plant – Republic of Rwanda

Start Date:
2023

Status: In Progress

Kigali, Rwanda’s capital, is facing significant water supply challenges due to rapid urbanization. To meet the growing demand, the Water and Sanitation Corporation (WASAC), in partnership with Hungary, launched the Karenge Water Treatment Plant Expansion as part of Rwanda’s broader Water Master Plan. This project aims to provide a reliable, sustainable water supply to the eastern part of Kigali and Rwamagana District.

Key Developments:

Capacity
Expansion

Increasing water treatment capacity from 12,000 m³/day to 48,000 m³/day, providing an additional 36,000 m³ of clean water daily to Kigali.

Improved Public Health

The expansion will supply clean water to approximately 615,000 people, enhancing hygiene and overall health in the region.

Sustainable Water Supply

Strengthening infrastructure to ensure long-term water security.

This project is a critical step in improving water accessibility, public health, and urban resilience in Kigali and beyond.
